How to Cook Frozen Salmon: Methods and Recipes

Salmon is a fish powerhouse. Not only does this oily fish make for a tasty meal, it’s also a great source of Omega-3, protein, selenium and vitamins B6 & B12. Its nutrients can help contribute to healthy bones and muscles and help to keep your heart healthy. Some food for thought for you.

It’s no wonder, then, that this fabulous fish is one of the nation’s favourites. The catch of the day, some would say.

How to cook frozen salmon?

If you’re stuck in one of those tricky situations where you’ve just got home and realised that you forgot to take your salmon out of the freezer, but will settle for nothing less, fear not, as we’ll guide you through the process of cooking it from frozen. Trust us, no one will be able to tell the difference.
Frozen salmon can be prepared in a number of ways: in the oven, on the grill, and yes, even in the microwave.

How to cook frozen salmon in the oven:

1) Preheat the oven to around 200°C, Fan 170°C, Gas Mark 6.
2) Place the salmon in a baking dish or pan, and add whatever seasoning takes your fancy. Even something as simple as a little lemon, salt, and pepper works perfectly.
3) Cover the dish or pan with foil, and place it into the oven.
4) Bake for approximately five minutes per ounce of fish. If, for example, you have a 6-ounce salmon fillet, allow it to bake for around half an hour.
5) Ensure that the salmon fillet is cooked by checking that it’s flaky with a fork.
6) Remove, allow it to rest in the dish or pan, and serve!

Simple, isn’t it? If you want to make life even easier for yourself, our Wild Caught Salmon fillets in a Lemon & Dill sauce make for a delicious meal with no effort.

  1. Pre-heat the oven to around 190°C, Fan 170°C, Gas Mark 5.
  2. Place the bag containing the fish on a baking tray.
  3. Do not pierce the bag!
  4. Place the bag in the middle of the oven.
  5. Leave for around 25 minutes (remember that two or more portions may take longer).

How to cook frozen salmon on the grill:

1) Preheat the grill to medium-high heat (or around 190°C).
2) Remove the salmon from its packaging and wash away any ice crystals or frost, then gently dry it with a paper towel.
3) Grease a sheet of foil (that’s slightly bigger than the salmon so that you can fold it around the fish later) with cooking oil, and lay the salmon in the middle (skin side down).
4) Season the salmon fillet – maybe lemon or orange for a citrus twist?
5) Fold the foil to create somewhat of a loose tent around the fish.
6) Place the foil on the grill and cook the fish for around 16-20 minutes. Make sure that you flip it half-way through, and add more seasoning if needs be.
7) Serve and enjoy!

How to cook frozen salmon in the microwave:

1) Remove the salmon from its packaging and place it on a microwave-safe plate.
2) Microwave on ‘defrost’ for one to two minutes.
3) Does the salmon feel warm? If it does, allow it to sit until it cools down, then microwave it for another one to two minutes, again on ‘defrost.’ If it’s not warm, place it in the microwave straight away and run ‘defrost’ for another one to two minutes.
4) Repeat the process above until the fish is fully defrosted (generally speaking, this takes six to eight minutes per pound of salmon).
5) Once defrosted, cut the salmon into smaller pieces, and that they are no thicker than two inches.
6) Season to taste, and add two tablespoons of water to the plate.
7) Cover the plate with microwave-safe cling film, ensuring that it’s a tad loose to let the steam escape.
8) At this point, you’ll want to microwave the fish on ‘high’ for approximately three to six minutes, depending on how many ounces of salmon you’re cooking. Start by microwaving it for three minutes to ensure you don’t overcook it.
9) Fully cooked salmon should be flaky. If the fish isn’t flaky, return to the microwave for a minute at a time, and repeat until the salmon is ready.

Of course, as with most things in life, there’s always an easier option. Our mouth-watering Wild Salmon in Sweet Chilli Sauce offers a speedy, delightful dinner with little to no effort. All you need to do is place the bag into the microwave straight from the freezer and heat for around five to eight minutes, depending on power and the number of bags you’re cooking.
