Chilli Chicken Origin: Where Does It Come From?

The history behind this dish is quite peculiar;unique to India, it was born after taking inspiration from popular Chinese dishes and adding Indian spices and flavours to adapt to the palate of the local population.

As a result, there is no standard recipe of this dish, and it varies from family to family. It’s believed to have been invented by Nelson Wang in 1975. When asked about his chilli chicken recipe, Wang described the process as starting from basic Indian ingredients like garlic, ginger and chillies, and then following by mixing them with soy sauce, corn-starch and chicken typical of the Chinese cuisine.

Who would have thought that there’s so much more history behind this comfort food? You’ll now be able to surprise future guests by not only preparing the best chilli chicken out there but also by showing off your knowledge of its origins.
