What Temperature Should A Freezer Be?

The ideal temperature for your freezer is around the -18°C mark, but it will still function well down to -25°C.

Here at Birds Eye, we want you to enjoy our range of frozen food products to the max, and this is the temperature you need to hit in order to keep the Captain’s produce at its best. If you’re unsure of just how brrrr-illiant it can be for you nutritionally, then check out our frozen food myths page including the expert opinions of registered dietitian and health writer, Laura Tilt.

Now let us give you some top tips on how you can check the temperature of your freezer and the best way to pack your food to keep all your frozen goodies in tip top condition!

How To Check Your Freezer’s Temperature

Unfortunately, not every freezer has its own thermometer, but nobody wants to come down in the morning to discover that their treasure trove of frozen delights has been turned into a big box of melted mush.

So, how can you avoid this? Well, grab two big bags of your favourite Birds Eye frozen veg and sandwich your thermometer between them before closing your freezer door. Come back around eight hours later to see if the temperature has hit that magic -18°C mark.

How To Organise Your Freezer
The Captain works hard to gather the finest range of frozen food for you, and here at Birds Eye, we believe the key to happiness in your kitchen lies in the form of a well organised freezer.
But how do you build this frozen fortress? Let us give you a brief guide to freezer stacking etiquette:

  1. Separate your meats from your poultry, from your veg, from your ice cream. Finding that bag of peas or pack of burgers quickly will help to you get in and out of your freezer asap keeping everything perfectly chilly.
  2. Grab a permanent marker and label everything. Make a note of when you’ve made or bought your food, and what it actually is if in a Tupperware. This will help you keep a record of everything in your freezer.
  3. Freeze portion sizes in clear containers. If you’ve cooked up one of our delicious recipes then why not then freeze them by serving size. Just put them in a clear container (so you know what you’ve cooked up), and say goodbye to food wastage, but hello to some glorious packed lunches for you and the kids. What’s more, Birds Eye’s re-sealable bags including our peas are another super handy way to store frozen food.
  4. Pack your freezer full to the brim. While we don’t want you to risk a batch of the Captain’s finest fish fingers dropping onto your foot, it’s important that you fill your freezer to conserve energy. Why? An empty freezer requires more energy to keep your items nice and chilled, so make sure your Birds Eye products are in a solid Tetris formation. You’ll always have options to hand, and will do one extra little thing to help the planet.
