Our Sustainability Programme

This is the story of Forever Food Together, our sustainability programme. We are passionate about providing responsibly sourced and prepared food to you that is tasty and nutritious – and our aim is to do this forever.

Our business started to pioneer responsible sourcing and preparation of food decades ago and during this time we have been at the forefront of developing global food safety, traceability and sustainability standards

Today our food is independently audited and certified to show that our sources of food are safe and responsibly produced. We take care that our food comes from areas that can supply food now and into the future.

Unfortunately, in recent times, society has become wasteful in the way it uses food. 

We believe that all the hard work we do to responsibly source and prepare our food is wasted if society continues to generate the vast amounts of food waste that is being reported.

The world is wasting 1/3rd of food produced!

Across the EU over 89 million tonnes of food are wasted each year and this is estimated to rise to 126 million tonnes by 2020 if no action is taken!

Our passion for making the most of our food started a long time ago.

It’s almost 90 years since Clarence Birdseye invented frozen food.

And in Europe today, we serve our food to people at mealtimes more than any other frozen food company.

Preserving Nutrients and Taste

One of the best ways to make the most of nutritious food is to use quick frozen food because this preserves
valuable nutrients. Frozen Food helps you
create meals that are nutritious and
easy to prepare, with just the
amount of food you need to cook.

Freezing also helps everybody make the most of our precious food resources at every point in the food’s journey from land or sea to your plate. We are able to do this because quick freezing food preserves the taste and nutrition.

Ingredients can be sourced locally or from afar without spoiling. For example, we can source from fisheries that are managed for now and into the future or source from farmers or growers who manage
the land responsibly and can
harvest our vegetables when
they are plentiful and in
their best condition.

Independent studies that compared households with similar meals such as fresh and frozen showed that 47% less food is wasted in the home when eating frozen food vs similar meals that were fresh or chilled.

Healthier Meal Choices for All

When somebody trusts you to feed them, it’s a big responsibility.

It’s not just about putting food on the plate. It’s about providing food that’s tasty and good for you.

And we know that the obesity crisis is worrying many people which is why we work daily to innovate healthier meal choices to help with a balanced diet.

Chicken, fish and vegetables are amongst the most nutritious foods you can eat and we prepare food that allows you to choose a healthier balanced diet.

You’ll be seeing a lot of tasty new product innovations from us in the coming months and years.

And the recipe for every one of those meals will have been checked carefully to make sure it’s as nutritious as possible.

Responsible Sourcing

We want you to also know that the food you’re choosing is responsibly sourced and prepared and can be traced back to its origin.

We work closely with farmers, growers and fishermen to make sure we know where our food comes from and that it can be grown, reared and caught responsibly for the long term.

So for our Forever Food Together programme to succeed, we need to continue to focus on many areas of the business so here is a reminder of what our goals are and what we do to drive their progress:

Our Fish

We are famous for our Fish Fingers so naturally we work to always source our fish responsibly. We know the names of the boats that catch our fish and require the fisheries we source from to operate to very high standards before we accept the fish to be caught.

An example of this is how we have worked with WWF and the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) for nearly twenty years to certify fisheries around the world to make sure that they can be responsibly sourced from the wild for now and into the future.

We use the same principle to source responsibly farmed fish, working with our suppliers who must meet either the Aquaculture Stewardship Council, Global Aquaculture Alliance or GLOBALGAP farming standards.

Any chicken that you eat was once an egg. When it’s our chicken, we know where that egg was laid, and how the chicken was reared and treated throughout its life.

We also do not accept vegetable feed used in the rearing of our chickens to have come from deforested land.

The way we prepare great tasting food is as important as where it comes from.

Insisting that our food is frozen quickly locks in freshness and nutrition.

And we always look to reduce the energy and water we use and focus on making the most of the raw materials and ingredients that make up a recipe.

Finally, our food developers always receive advice to ensure that our labelling meets the most up to date regulations whilst working to give easy to follow cooking instructions.

Here are the standards we use to check the responsible sourcing and preparation standards for our food. They are all independently run from us by third party organisations – experts in the areas they work in.
