Aquaculture production (fish and shellfish farming) is one of the youngest and fastest growing forms of food production on the planet, making up half of global fish and shellfish production.
It has improved the livelihoods of many people in developing countries but there are concerns over possible environmental and social impacts such as waste water control or pressure on mangrove ecosystems for the construction of farming ponds.
The conversion ratios of fishmeal to fish and seafood have improved dramatically over recent years, but aquaculture continues to require care and attention to ensure it is used in an environmentally responsible manner.
We believe that responsible standards are vital for demonstrating that fish and seafood farming can be a viable and more sustainable food production method.
We adopt third party certification schemes, having taken a leadership role in developing two global standards, which are pivotal to aquaculture becoming more sustainable.
We only sourced Farmed Fish and Seafood to independently verified responsible aquaculture standards such as GAA (Global Aquaculture Alliance) or the ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) which we were instrumental in helping set up scheme with WWF Netherlands and the Dutch Sustainability Initiative, IDH.We pay attention to the origin and species of fish meal and fish oil used in our aquaculture and have full traceability of the fish we use.
Again, we helped shape the IFFO RS Standard, a global standard and certification programme for the responsible supply of fishmeal and fish oil operated by IFFO which is an international ‘not for profit’ organisation that represents and promotes the fishmeal, fish oil and wider marine ingredients industry worldwide.
