Making the Most of Food Resources across the supply chain and in the home is one of the most sustainable actions we can all take. This helps reduce carbon emissions, makes precious nutritious food available to more people and lowers the growing pressure on the earth’s resources..
According to the UN’s Food Agriculture Organisation and the World Resources Institute and the EU, a third of the food the world produces is lost or wasted.Across the EU, it’s estimated that over 89 million tonnes of food is wasted every year and this is predicted to reach 126 million tonnes by 2020.
With the world’s population predicted to reach 8 billion by 2020 - it’s more important than ever that we value our food more than ever to help feed our growing populations.
Forever Food Together is our sustainability response to the fact that the world is vulnerable to fluctuations in the global food supply and faces a food security challenge as the global population grows.
We have been feeding consumers across Europe for decades and our approach is to play a leading role in the development of long-term food supplies by designing and supporting the implementation of sustainable food verification schemes such as those for Fisheries and Agriculture. We do this in partnership with many stakeholders including our own experts, fishermen, farmers, growers, suppliers, non-governmental organisations and policymakers.
We also believe it is crucial to encourage more sustainable food consumption by maximizing food resources otherwise all the hard work we do with our partners to certify to such high food standards is lost especially in the home.
We also operate manufacturing or preparation processes that are designed to maximise food resources and minimise waste. Where waste is unavoidably generated we segregate to aid recycling where possible and process the remainder for energy recovery without resorting to landfill.
We helped with research for the UK WRAP’s first UK Love Food Hate Waste campaign in 2008 and are continuing the journey to understand more about the opportunities to maximise food resources across our food supply chains.
Recent independent research in the UK, Netherlands and Austria has shown that a key factor in helping maximise food resources is the Food Preservation Method. Slowing down spoilage of food is an essential tool in maintaining food safety and extending shelf-life.For example, it has been shown that when consumers ate frozen food in the home versus food with shorter shelf life such as fresh or chilled, the food waste generated was 47% lower.
This is why we believe that freezing food in the supply chain and using and frozen food in the home is a natural and great way to maximise food resources.
