Freezing wastes less food even before you buy it

Freezing food makes a difference

One of the best ways to live more sustainably and make your food go further is by freezing it. The freezing process cuts out food waste twice as much as fresh or chilled products – just one of the advantages of frozen food.

By freezing your food, you could create healthy and nutritious meals that are both easy to prepare and use only the amount of food you want to cook with.

Freezing changes how you eat, for the better

Freezing wastes less food even before you buy it

In order to avoid food waste and make our products keep for longer, we freeze them at the earliest possible opportunity. That way, they can be stored and transported easily and won’t be spoiled before they get to you.

Choosing more sustainable food

Freezing changes how you eat, for the better

When it comes to food sustainability, the products you keep in your freezer are a lot less likely to be thrown away than the food in your fridge.

Because frozen foods are pre-portioned, it’s easier to cook just the amount you need and avoid wasting any food in the process. Plus, if you’ve got any left-overs, you can just stick them in the freezer and save them for later.

Frozen foods have a much longer shelf-life than fresh products, meaning you can cook them whenever you like and not when the ‘use by’ date tells you.

The food you need, when you need it

Choosing more sustainable food

Because frozen food can be transported from anywhere without spoiling, we’re able to avoid fishing in areas where stocks are low. This is just one of the ways in which we support food sustainability – we also choose farmers who manage their land well and treat livestock properly.

Our story started a long time ago

The food you need, when you need it

We take it for granted that we can eat tasty, nutritious vegetables such as peas and spinach all year round – but this is only possible through freezing our food. To enjoy fresh vegetables during the winter, when they’re not able to grow, we either need to transport them all the way from one climate to another, or freeze them.

When fresh food travels a long distance, not only are the chances of food waste are much higher, but the food itself is more expensive and will deteriorate faster in your fridge. By freezing your vegetables, we’re able to lock in that freshness, taste and nutrition and charge you less.

Trusting us to feed you

Our story started a long time ago

It is almost 90 years since Clarence Birds Eye became a pioneer of frozen food and changed the way families cook forever. We’ve been championing the benefits of frozen food for decades now, and truly believe it’s the best way to put healthy and nutritious meals on the table that don’t break the bank. And our hard work has paid off – in Europe today, more people serve sustainable food products from Birds Eye at mealtimes than any other frozen food company.

Our History

Enjoying tasty food, and working sustainably

Trusting us to feed you

Our customers trust us to feed them well, a responsibility that we at Birds Eye take seriously.

We understand how important it is for you to provide your loved ones with food that’s not only tasty, but healthy too.

We also think that you should know where your food comes from. More and more, our customers want to know that they’re choosing responsibly managed and sustainable food products for their mealtimes, and that all food can be traced back to its original source.

Helping to protect fish stocks

Enjoying tasty food, and working sustainably

We've always worked closely with farmers, growers and fishermen to make sure our food tastes great and is packed with nutrition. For us, knowing where our food comes from is essential.

Today, we’re still working just as hard to make sure our food is grown, reared and caught responsibly.

Taking care where our chickens come from

Helping to protect fish stocks

All of our fisheries are responsibly managed, so when you next eat one of Birds Eye’s fish fingers, you can rest assured you’re not damaging vital fish stocks. We value our relationships with fisheries, and even know the names of the boats that catch our fish!

When over-fishing started threatening cod supplies, we encouraged our customers to try other types of fish – such as pollock – instead. We also work with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and fisheries around the world to make sure that all of our fish can be sustainably sourced for the future.

How we grow our vegetables

Taking care where our chickens come from

At Birds Eye, we put food sustainability at the heart of what we do. That’s why, when it comes to our chickens, we know every last detail about where they came from, how they were reared, and how they were treated throughout their lives.

We choose our farmers carefully, so we know that all chickens used for our frozen food products had more space to roam around than most of the chicken you can buy elsewhere.

Our Forever Food Together promises

How we grow our vegetables

Our farmers are helping to make our food products more sustainable in all sorts of ways. For instance, did you know that keeping tyres only partly inflated helps to stop farm vehicles from damaging the soil?

This is just one of the things that we specify in our high standards for farmers and growers, as well as details designed to protect soil fertility and biodiversity, such as leaving land at the edge of all fields where wildlife can thrive.

Our Forever Food Together promises

We may have come a long way in supporting food sustainability, but in order for our Forever Food Together mission to succeed, we need to keep going and do even more.

So, here’s a reminder of our three promises to you:

  • We’ll help everybody to understand how frozen food is a more sustainable choice.
  • We’ll offer you new product innovations allowing you to make healthier choices.
  • We’ll source and prepare your food responsibly.

How we’ll help you choose a balanced diet

Marking our products with the image of our green captain is just one of the ways we’ll let shoppers know that frozen food makes sense. We want to make sure everyone knows how to avoid food waste through our products – because the more people choose frozen, the more they’re doing to help our planet.

Goal 1

Making sure our food is responsibly sourced

How we’ll help you choose a balanced diet

We only produce food that contributes towards a healthy, balanced diet. Chicken, fish and vegetables are among the most nutritious foods you can eat, and there are many advantages to frozen food, too.

You’ll be seeing a bunch of tasty new product innovations from us in the coming months and years, with the recipe for every one checked carefully to make sure it’s as nutritious as possible.

Goal 2

How we prepare your food matters too

Making sure our food is responsibly sourced

We promise that all of our food will be responsibly sourced. We maintain strict standards on where our products come from and how we choose them – and we’ll keep doing more. Find out about how our frozen fish is supporting food sustainability by clicking the icon below.

Goal 3

Together for a sustainable future

How we prepare your food matters too

The way food is prepared is just as important as where it comes from. By freezing our food quickly – within hours of being caught or picked – we’re able to lock in that vital freshness and nutrition.

We’re always looking for ways to reduce food waste and cut energy use, whether that’s in the way we source our food, or make it.

Our Goal

Keeping our eye on Forever Food Together

Together for a sustainable future

Forever Food Together is all about people working together to bring Birds Eye customers the quality they expect from our food. From growers, farmers and fishermen to ingredient suppliers, retailers, governments and non-governmental organisations, all of us at Birds Eye are fighting for food sustainability.
