The Expert, James Young
When it comes to monitoring the growth of Birds Eye peas and deciding when they are absolutely ripe to pick, no one knows more than our pea expert James Young. Find out what he’s looking for in the perfect Birds Eye pea.
Q: So, what makes you an ‘expert’?
A: Well, I’ve got a degree in agronomy – the science behind crop production - but I’m continually learning because every pea harvest is different. I’ve been part of the Birds Eye agriculture team for 13 years, so this will be my fourteenth pea harvest. In total, I’ve been responsible for the production of half a million tonnes of peas… And that’s quite a lot of peas!
Q: What do you actually do all day?
A: I head up a team of pea experts including the Fieldsmen who go out and walk the crops, look at the peas, listen to the rattle on their boots, pick them off the stalk and taste them. Together, we ensure that the crop is grown to Birds Eye quality and also according to our Sustainable Agriculture Standards. I also maintain the consistency of taste between our factories in Hull and Lowestoft.
Q: And how do you get that Birds Eye quality?
A: Our peas are only harvested when our Fieldsmen feel they are perfectly ripe. Then, as the peas come into the factories, samples of them are tasted by us to make sure that they are sweet and tasty enough. We relay the results back to the Fieldsmen so that they are always matching their plans to maintain Birds Eye quality.
